KOBAKO

Jacqui Ghosin – The Art of Enclosure

KOBAKO

Red Japanese-style seal with characters inside a circle.

Beauty contained.

In Japan, kobako are imbued with heightened significance and purpose — very specific enclosures for very specific things. In this body of work, the enclosure itself is the essential experience. It is here, as one opens each object, that an emotion or unexpected surprise is revealed.

STATEMENT

I have always found containers of all kinds fascinating. At their most basic level, they enclose objects. But they are also caretakers of intangibles — memories, emotions, possibilities. This is what intrigues me most.
While the Kobako I create may contain any number of items, I view the enclosure itself as the focus of the work.

OF THE WORK

“Each object tells a story or reveals something unexpected — using seemingly incongruous materials or patterns that are, upon reflection, perfectly harmonious.”
