About
THE ARTIST
Jacqui Ghosin.
Working from the central coast of California, Jacqui Ghosin makes Japanese-inspired enclosures — Kobako — by hand, one at a time. The practice is unhurried by intention.
OF THE WORK
“I am fascinated with creating a discrete enclosure whose purpose is not necessarily intended to house anything. Instead, the object is, in and of itself, the full artistic experience.”“Each Kobako tells a story or reveals something unexpected — using seemingly incongruous materials or patterns that are, upon reflection, perfectly harmonious.”BIOGRAPHY
With a lifelong interest in art and design, Jacqui spent her professional career as a graphic designer. She earned her undergraduate degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, followed by graduate studies at the Allgemeine Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel, Switzerland. She worked in Munich, Germany, and then returned to the United States, settling in San Francisco. After tenures at Addison Design Consultants and Landor Associates, she and two partners opened Design One. In 2016, after 25 successful years, she retired to explore her own artistic interests. At the heart of Kobako is an interplay between incongruity and harmony, expectation and surprise. Each new piece demands an exploration of new materials, new combinations, new forms, and new construction. The possibilities are endless.
