ABOUT THIS PIECE

Land of the Rising Sun is a reference to the island of Japan, east of China where the sun rises each day. This Sogara is rich with auspicious symbolism, specifically longevity, but also the pines for strength, cranes for good fortune, and turtles for wisdom and their connection between the earthly and divine realms. The cherry blossoms, in contrast, represent contradictory qualities: life's delicacy and transience, beauty and renewal.
