ABOUT THIS PIECE

Harlequin was inspired by the Katsura Palace in Kyoto, Japan. Specifically, a tokonoma is a recessed space in a Japanese-style reception room in which items for artistic appreciation are displayed. At the Katsura Palace, the entire back wall of the tokonoma features a large blue-and-cream checkered pattern. This Harlequin enclosure attempts to capture the calm reflective nature of that memorable space.
